Robert Miles is one of those rare things: a musician constantly progressing, striving to rework and restructure his sound, adventuring in search of new aural frontiers untouched by others. After selling over fourteen million records worldwide, playing around the globe and working with a host of instrumental collaborators, Thirteen – his new album to be released on his own S:alt Records – looks set to continue the producer’s stellar journey ever further.
A rich mix of progressive and jazz influenced compositions, Thirteen is Miles’s improvising in mood, discovering definition in short cinematic movements. With rhythm as the key, Miles’s incessantly mines layers of synthesised sound, exploring the outer limits of alternative and electronic music. A sonic leap forward from the airy experimentations of critically acclaimed previous albums Organik and Miles_Gurtu, Thirteen weaves keyboard atmospherics and percussive polyrhythm’s into a full length guaranteed to rub shoulders with the ambient considerations of past greats like Vangelis, Pink Floyd and Aphrodite’s Child.
The story of Robert Miles, born Roberto Concina, starts in the Swiss town of Fleurier in 1969, and from there a move to Italy whilst still a young boy, where a youth spent in the company of the family’s grand piano and turntables begot a passion for music that refuses to cease. It wasn’t until Miles turned seventeen though – after forming a pirate radio station and beginning to DJ live – that he realised making music was something that he could do full time: “when I realised that my feelings had been conveyed through my music, my life changed” he says, and that change was further enhanced by a deal with BMG and the release of debut Dreamland, an album that racked up 16 platinum and 12 gold discs in 21 countries around the world.
